Over 200 people missing following a landslide in Uganda

03/03/2010

Around 200 people are still missing after a landslide in the mountainous area of Bududa in Uganda.

Over 80 people have already been confirmed dead as villagers, now joined by police and members of the armed forces, continue to try and rescue survivors from the wreckage.

The disaster was caused by sustained heavy rainfall for a period of two months and has affected around 3,000 residents in three different villages.

Access to the settlements, however, can only be gained via a three-hour walk from the main highway.

Kevin Nabutwa, a Ugandan Red Cross official, ratified that 86 bodies had been found.

Around 50 students are believed to be among the missing or dead after they had attempted to take shelter in a hospital.

Last month, a village in Indonesia fell victim to a landslide when flash floods caused a river to burst its banks in the Malang district of East Java province.
