Zambian HIV and AIDS trial victims won't get compensation
25/02/2010
Women who contracted HIV and AIDS after partaking in microbicide experiments in Mazabuka are to receive no compensation, Zambia's health minister has stated.
Kapembwa Simbao explained to parliament that no reimbursement was necessary as the participants were aware of the risks involved in the trials, according to Zambian Watchdog.
He claimed all the women signed contract agreements which outlined the possible hazards, but conceded those who had caught the disease should receive adequate assistance to help them through their struggle.
Despite admitting the results of the Microbicide Development Programme were discouraging, Mr Simbao asserted similar trials would continue in an effort to provide information to benefit policy strategies - and maintained the practices adhered to ethical standards.
The announcement follows recent news that motorcycles are aiding the fight against HIV and AIDS in Zambia, as the initiative Riders for Health is helping those suffering from the virus receive treatment more quickly.
