Pakistan's prime minister 'could bring political stability'

25/01/2010

Pakistan's current prime minister could be the country's best hope when it comes to introducing political stability, rather than the country's current president Asif Ali Zardari, it has been suggested.

According to a moneycontrol.com report, Yusuf Raza Gilani, who is also vice-chairman of Zardari's ruling Pakistan People's Party, is somebody that foreign diplomats and representatives feel the most comfortable dealing with.

It added that when senior government officials from the US pay a visit to Pakistan, they tend to hold discussions with Mr Gilani, who they consider to be a tactful individual.

A western diplomat, who requested to remain anonymous, told the publication: "The prime minister has a reputation for moderation, always looking for consensus. The army trusts him."

Meanwhile, Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi warned the US earlier this month that carrying out further air strikes on its borders in a bid to root out the Taliban may damage relations between the two nations, Reuters reported.
