Malawi 'tackling HIV and AIDS well'
29/12/2009
Malawi is taking admirable measures to tackle the spread of HIV and AIDS in the country.
This is according to US global AIDS coordinator ambassador Eric Goosby, who is quoted by AllAfrica.com as stating that the country is progressing well in its efforts to raise awareness of the virus.
He joined US ambassador to Malawi Peter Bodde and the country's minister of health Moses Chirambo at the opening of the ministry's HIV department - which was established using funds from the US government, the news agency informed.
Mr Goosby is quoted as stating: "The Malawian government has shown strong leadership in responding to the AIDS epidemic.
He added that the groups it has forged work hard to engage with "civil society, patients affected with HIV [and] the faith-based community".
Last week, Malawi asked the international community for assistance after an earthquake measuring six on the Richter scale hit the country's Karonga district, reported the Associated Press.
