Improvements in Albanian electoral procedures reported

03/07/2009

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has praised aspects of the voting procedures during Albania's recent elections.

Observers of the country's election day claimed that the atmosphere was one of "overall calm", with voter registration, identification procedures and an amended legal framework all reported as successful.

However, there remain areas for improvement, the monitors added, such as politicisation of technical aspects and violations during the campaign.

A more definite assessment will be made once votes have been counted, the OCSE revealed.

Commenting on the findings, Wolfgang Grossruck, vice-president of the OSCE parliamentary assembly and special coordinator of the OSCE short-term observer mission, said: "I'm certainly happy about the progress we saw, but there is also a considerable number of issues that need to be tackled, in particular the polarised political climate."

The OCSE also has a mission in Moldova to observe the early parliamentary elections taking place on July 29th.
