Ongoing floods continue to threaten Mongolia

30/06/2009

Heavy rain in Mongolia has led to a breaching of flood defences in a number of Mongolian regions.

According to Mongolia-Web, heavy rain at the end of last week resulted in a breach of a 100-metre stretch which caused the flooding of 75 homes in three sub-districts of Baganuur district of Ulaanbaatar.

It is understood that the flood waters led to the local health centre being submerged and that three schools have suffered broken windows and damaged roofs as a result of the storm.

Emergency workers had to rescue 283 people and have repaired the breached embankment in case of subsequent heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, figures have been released which show the extent of last week's storm in the region, with reports suggesting that some 96, 701 livestock were killed after strong winds swept the Sukhbaatar and Dornogobi provinces.

Last week, the International Monetary Fund announced the approval of a $39 million (£23.4 million) award to Mongolia to help the country combat the current global recession.
