What’s the context and purpose of the role?
People with disabilities are amongst the most disadvantaged in developing countries. Appropriate education and training services are non-existent or very limited and there’s little support for people with disabilities. Few primary teachers have the training and skills to effectively handle children with special needs. You will either work as a volunteer at the teacher’s colleges, schools to equip trainee teachers with the skills needed to identify, assess and interact with SEN pupils, or with a Ministry of Education office to raise awareness of disability issues. You’ll make a direct contribution to improving the quality of education and life for disadvantaged children in these countries.
What does the role involve?
Professional Qualifications:
You must have a first degree or equivalent in Special Needs Education or a BA in Education with modules and training in Special Education. You must be a trained teacher, with a minimum of five years teaching experience with persons with disabilities. In some placements, experience of training/rehabilitating children with disabilities, or in social services is desirable
Personal Qualifications
You’ll have strong relationship building and communication skills and patience.
